Things That Suck

1. Waking up early on a Sunday morning, driving an hour to Troy (the only of some 12-15 sports bars I called to show the ManUtd-Arsenal match) and settling down in front of the TV only to find out 3 minutes before kickoff that the bar's satellite receiver was malfunctioning (as, apparently, it had yesterday). So, no game--but breakfast was on the house. Woo. Hoo.

2. That Arsenal lost said match, apparently on an extremely dodgy penalty decision from referee Mike "Mr.-automatic-penalty-at-Old-Trafford" Riley (who also apparently failed even to call a foul when Rio Ferdinand, as the last man, bundled over Freddie in the first half--normally a red card offence).

Then again, perhaps it worked out for the best that I didn't watch it--who wants to watch their team lose? Plus, reading about the bad calls was annoying, but I'm sure watching them would have been much worse. Arsenal's amazing unbeaten run had to end sometime--bummer it ended on 49 & at Old Trafford.

Still, the boys have 8 pts on United & 2 on Chelsea. They've been playing fabulous football & I bet they start on another run next week.

Update: Just watched the highlights on Arsenal PLUS. That really was some ridiculous stuff from Riley--unless the rules have been changed to allow a defender to just run somebody over from behind, Rio deserved a clear red card for barging into Freddie & denying him a clear run on goal. But the penalty decision--wow. If I were Wayne Rooney I'd be embarrassed to look Sol Campbell in the eye at the next England squad meet-up.

Go Sox!!

Two nights in a row for Ortiz on the last at bat. Still, given my recent predictions, at this point I confidently foresee an ultimate Yankees ALCS victory.

In other news, here's another reason to the hate the Yankees (John Henry, the Sox owner, doesn't seem to do much political giving).

Republicans for Kerry

Here's a nice endorsement of Kerry by former William G. Milliken, a Republican former Governor of Michigan.

It'd be really nice if the modern Republican party were more like the party Milliken describes. I just wish more Republicans were like him--say, Sens. Chaffee, Collins & Snowe--would wake up, recognize this & stand up for their principles against Bush & his right-wing religious base. Or, do the most decent thing & pull a Jeffords.

Harnessing My Powers

So last week I observed that it "never rains here," noting that it had yet to rain since my arrival in August.

It's rained--or at least been drizzly & gray--every single day since then.

Clearly I must now express my gut feeling that Bush will win in a blowout.

A Few Random Observations About Michigan

--As I was handing in the final draft of my first legal memo today, I noticed a Law School calendar on the door of the legal secretaries' office, and I entered a state of shock. This is the 6th of our 14-week semester. Come next Friday, I'll be 1/4th of the way through being a 1L, and 1/12th of a lawyer. Kind of. How did this happen so quickly?

--It never rains here. Since I arrived in Michigan on August 28th, today is the first daytime rain I've seen. Quite the contrast from the near nightly 5pm rain bursts in DC.

--I've been pleasantly surprised so far by how much I've been enjoying all of my classes. I hadn't necessarily been expecting to be so engaged by Contracts or Property. I mentioned this to an attorney at my old office, and his reply was amusing: "I'm glad that you are finding your classes interesting. So many law students do not. That may be what separates the sane ones from those of us who find the practice of law interesting and satisfying."

--"Go Blue!" is clearly quite the slogan around here; you'll see it on bumper stickers, t-shirts, and even Campus maintenance vehicles sport signs boasting "We Make Blue Go," or something. Yet, for football games, everyone wears yellow. While chanting "Go Blue!" I don't get it.

--I'm also not sure Michigan 'fans' really support their team, or just hate Ohio State. During the one game I attended, there were regular chants of "F*ck Ohio." Michigan was not playing a team from Ohio. That is extremely lame.

--The phenomenon of people holding megaphones and insulting people either on their way to the game (damn you're fat!, etc) or, in my case, walking away from the stadium (hey dumbass, stadium's that way. And Arsenal, what the f*ck is that?) is new to me. I don't think behavior like that goes on in Lincoln; then again, I haven't been near Memorial Stadium on a game day in years. In any event, so far I have been totally stymied in my efforts to find a bar/pub willing to devote a TV to soccer on a Saturday. Hopefully I'll find one in time for the big ManUtd-Arsenal game in two weeks. If anybody knows of a good place, please let me know.
